　ふと、あるラジオ番組で明石家さんまさんが言っていたことを思い出しました。10代のころ、笑福亭松之助師匠のところで弟子っ子修行をしていたさんまさんは、毎朝廊下掃除をやらされていました。
　 ある冬の日、いつものようにぞうきんがけをしていると、酔って朝帰りしたらしい師匠が通りかかり、「なあ、そんなことしていて楽しいか？」と聴いてきたそ うです。さんまさんが「いいえ」と答えると、「そうか、そうやろな」と一言。そのあと師匠がかけたのは、”だったら、やめろ”でも、”我慢してやれ”でも なく、「なら、どうやったら楽しくなるか、考えてみ」という言葉でした。それからさんまさんは、どうやったらぞうきんがけが楽しくなるか、一生懸命考えた そうです。もちろん、それで作業が楽になるわけはありません。
　しかし、あれこれ考えるうち、ぞうきんがけがなんとなく楽しく、苦痛ではなくなったそうです。
　人生で苦しいことをやらなければならないときは、必ずある。
　けれど、そこにささやかな楽しみや幸せを見つけるのは、知恵ひとつでできる。どんな状況にあっても、人間は考えることができるのですから。私はそういう知恵を持った人間でありたいです。
